Where does the smelly air go that the bathroom fan sucks up?

It's supposed to go the outside.

It's usually angled out through a duct to the roof or the side of the house towards the top of it, depending on where the bathroom is in the house.

If properly installed it is suppose to vent outside, either through a roof vent or a wall vent. If it vents into an interior space (attic, crawl space, etc.) it needs to be corrected.

Depending if you have a one story houese or more, it ieither ducts into the attic or goes outside though the roof. Af far as Chvilo's problem, it isn't the fan, it's the husband. Our bahtroom ceiling isn't big enough for a exaust fan for him. You need an industralized one.

air is ducted through the roof of your home in a special roof vent cap that is easy to install.
If you have a cheaper version - it only gets as far as the attic or roof cavity

It should be vented to the outside, if not you are pumping a lot of moisture from showers/bathtubs into your attic
