I have a Linksys WRT54GL, and up until yesterday it was working perfectly fine. Now all of the sudden it will not work wirelessly, but if I plug a lan cable into the router I can get internet without a problem. The router is attached to a cable modem, and I am also able to connect a lan cable to my cable modem and get internet fine. For some reason when I try to connect wirelessly I do not get an ip. I am using DHCP, and I am also using a Mac with OS X. Any suggestions? I have tried a second router and it is having the exact same problem. I have also reset the router to it's defaul settings without any success. Can anyone help me out? I was thinking of flashing the router and updating the firmware, but I am not sure that would work or not. Help is appreciated.

If the problem follows to a second router I would have to say its not the router but your wireless adapter on the computer. Make sure the adapter is set to use DHCP also and not setup to use a manually inputed IP and Subnet.

This may seem like an obvious answer, but since you mentioned using DHCP, check your network settings to make sure you aren't getting a static IP instead of having the computer fetch an IP provided by the router's DHCP server.

Start > Settings > Control Panel

Under network connections, right click on your wireless adapter and click on Properties at the bottom. In the list in the new window, select TCP/IP and click Properties. Make sure both of the selections are set to their first options. Have it "Obtain an IP address automatically" and also "Obtain DSN server address automatically".

If the issue is still there it would indicate a problem with the router's DHCP server. But since your other computer doesn't seem to have any issue connecting to the internet I doubt that it's an issue with the way the router is configured...

I have had similar issues with a linksys router. I always disconnect the power cord for about ten minutes and then reconnect. It has worked about ten times or so. It supposedly resets the connection with your modem and to the your ISP.

You have overheated the radio chipset.
I am running dd-wrt on my wrt54gl. This enables me to increase the power sent to the radio. Un-fourtunatley, this causes the router to overheat mighty fast. Then the overheat protection goes on about once a week. I just unplug it, wait about 2 hours, then plug it back in. The radio chipset re boots, and works fine again.

The same thing probally happened with your router, over a period of time.

Is the wireless light on the front of the router on?
Also if you reset a linksys wireless it reverts to factory settings and you have to turn the wireless back on

it fairly is ONE probability: an incredible style of cable & dsl cyber web vendors shop your MAC handle (the hardware identity of the LAN, on the spot, or router) the 1st time you connect and sign-on for his or her service it fairly is presented on your place. in case you signed on which contain your gadget (or yet another gadget) related directly to the cable/dsl modem once you first signed up, then the MAC handle of the LAN (community) card is saved of their equipment. (it fairly is their old way of battling you from connecting diverse machines to them whilst they used to cost in keeping with computing gadget related to the cyber web). in case you extra your Router later, then you definately could could call them to sparkling the MAC handle saved of their equipment. additionally, my previous routers have had an option to pass right into a diverse MAC handle to report. i do no longer keep in mind what it fairly is named precise now, possibly "overlaying??" you may enter the MAC handle of the 1st community/on the spot card that became related in this router placing or you will could call them to tell them which you have replaced hardware and that they could permit you to connect. I till now used Aldephia and Time Warner.... they the two operated this style.
