I was asked to translate this into english years ago by my nephew doing a school report on basketball and I felt deduced for not having any answer...

"PANG-ILAN ang Pilipinas sa listahan?"

It's the word "PANG-ILAN" I couldn't translate.
And yes... this is the original purple tactics.

Where does the Philippines rank on the list?

I think I like the answer provided by 2bme where "where" nicely brings out the essence of pang-ilan in the given question.
Let me assume a scenario where 2 guys, X and Y, were looking at a piece of paper.

X: "Pang-ilan and Pilipinas sa listahan ?"
Y: "ummm..., heto ! yun ika-apat."

ie
X : "where in the list is Philippines ?"
Y : "ummm..., here it is ! The 4th one.

Just a wild stab at Tagalog from a Tagalog beginner !

I have a similar question like that before..

There is no exact translation of the word 'pang-ilan' in English..just like the words. "ditse, ale, diko, asawa, bilas, etc"..thats how unique and rich the Tagalog language is..

Thats can be translated as ''What is the rank of the Philippines in the list...?"

ex: . Pang-ilan ang Pilipinas sa listahan ng mga kurakot na bansa?

"What is rank of the Philippines in the list of corrupt countries?
or " Among the list of corrupt countries, what is the rank of the Philippines?

Remember the passive and active in your elementary English?

You dont need to translate it word by word..

The correct expression for "pang-ilan" is "what number order". So, the question should be, "What number order is Philippines in the list?"

What is the rank of Philippines in the list?

Lolz, I always have this problem with asking "Pang-ilang anak ka?" in doing interviews. "What is your birth order?" is the right sentence but it sounds awkward and 80% of the time, my interviewees ask me what do I mean. =)
