Some people say it was his sister. But back then people lived to be hundreds of years old. It was a relative yes but not likely his sister. Adam and Eve had many children and those children had children, etc. Cain married a descendant of his parents. Like a great, great, great, great niece.

Edit: To the answer below me...Cain was already shown to be an evil man, he commited murder! There is no reason why he would not commit incest. No where in the Bible at that time does it mention that incest is even evil.

That is one of those interesting mysteries that proves that the bible is silly. No christian can explain why this woman was floating out in space in order for cain not to commit incest. It's all a bunch of hooey. Either Adam and eve's children had sex with each other or there were other people populating the earth.

My pastor, who is very cool, tells me that Cain's wife was of a different people. You must read the Bible as myth stories, even if you are a Christian. Myths are the stories of someone's religion, and they aren't literal. They will always have plot holes, so to speak.

The Old Testament is about how a particular group of people were created; specifically how the ancient Jews explained life on this planet. Cain's wife was not a Jew. She was not part of their culture, and thus did not factor in to their creation story.

She is not a relative of Cain. As far as that goes, if you go back and re-read the creation story, you will find the line "Male and female he created them." In context, it indicates that God created several males and females at once. In fact, the Bible leaves out the part about Lilith, the first human female partner of Adam. Lilith refused to lie beneath her husband, so Adam ditched her out of the garden and asked God to make him a partner who was more docile.

So you see, the Bible cannot be taken as a collection of facts. It is a collection of stories by unsophisticated people to explain how the world came to be the way it was and to teach the moral precepts of their belief to future generations.

It has been revealed in modern revelation that the wife of Cain was one of his nieces. Adam and Eve had sons and daughters and they had sons and daughters that provided the pool for marriage.

Eventually, marrying within the same family structure became unnecessary because of the widening family lineages.
