most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

Sounds like you have a lot of stuff running in the background. After your system is up and running, press Control Alt, Delete and that will bring up the Task Manager. This will show you how many things are running at startup. Once you know, you can then go in and take these unnecessary programs out of startup.

Too many legitimate programs running at startup and most likely not enough memory to go around. Start by trimming startup applications, carefully, using msconfig (go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG and click OK) go to Startup tab and start unchecking things, as long as you are sure you don't need them.

Next if its still too slow get a memory upgrade. Go to kingston.com and find your system, then you can get memory guranteed to be compatible.

Go to All programs and click on start up. It may be starting many programs that you don't need. They run in the back ground and slow you down. Just delete them.

Your hard drive is probably fragmented... Go to Windows Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter and run a defrag... this will re-connect all the loose fragments that make up your system !!!
