I've just been watching the news and there was another snippet of Bono saying that if governments put their minds to it, extreme poverty could be halved in the near future.
I'm sure Bono is right, but if was campaigning on a platform of - "If governments put their minds to it, the world's population could be halved in the near future" - Do you think he would get as much support?

The reason I am asking is that whatever the campaigners, charities, and philanthropists do to aleviate world poverty and hunger, the net result is always an increase in population, and this just pushes the problem forward to the next world crisis.

It seems to me the only effective way to combat poverty is a reduction in population, and it would be better to do this through education, contraception, and voluntary abortion, than to wait for desease, starvation, and warfare to do the job for us?

I couldn't agree more, reduction in population must be addressed before we will see any significant and long term reduction in poverty. As you say better education, contraception etc is the most effective way to do it. I think this is a crisis that will inevitably worsen if positive action isn't taken and soon! I don't think Bono would get as much support putting across this message as people seem to prefer to hear about quick fixes to combat poverty rather than the long term solutions that will obviously take time to reduce extreme poverty in the future.

Population is always subject to a system of checks and balances, Too many and there is always something like pestilence or war or famine to put a stop to over population. Malthus wrote about this ! No is the answer to Bono's situation regarding halving of polulations. Are you Brian Sismay? If you are then write to me and I will reply

No capitalist society will ever seriously undertake population control since population growth is directly related to economic growth. The population will continue to grow until a global catastrophe of epic proportions comes to the fore. This has, in fact, been our history. A good book on this topic is David Hacket Fischer's The Great Wave; Price revolutions and the rhythm of history.

See the difference between Bono and people like you is he's actually actively searching for solutions... not excuses to limit the population of people with dark skin.

i'm undecided if this could nicely be a query or a rant. to furnish earnings of the doubt, i've got visited eire many situations and have friends there and, as with every celeb, Bono's acceptance is blended. some love him; some hate him. same with Axl Rose, Barry Manilow or Frank Sinatra for that remember. i think the coronary heart of the project is: celeb or community Joe, we''re all human and none suited. Nor can all be delighted no remember how difficult you attempt - or how super your tax invoice. - a guy named Duh RIP: Paul Harvey

I literally do not know anyone who likes Bono. However we all feel strongly about the cause, its just Bono is a smug moron who thinks he is the second coming or the like.

It seems these people have answers but dont appear to implement them.

Why doesnt he do something instead of telling others to do something?

Im sure he can afford to with charging £75 a ticket for watching him sing

Fair point but don't have a solution - it is not OK for people to starve whilst the rest of the world lives in outrageous luxury.

you dont need a reduction in population

you just need to provide the basics for all

there is more than enough food to feed the 6.6 billion people in this world
