Nooo!!!!! Stay away from Stephen King & Dean Koontz... I LOVES me some Dresden Files. (the books... ) Ok, you'll like Simon Green's series called The Nightside , or Tales from the Nightside... something like that. The first one's call Something from the Nightside, 2 is Agents of Light and Darkness, 3 is Nightingale's Lament , 4 is Hex and the City , 5Paths not Taken, 6 Sharper than a Serpent's Tooth, 7 is Hell to Pay,, There are a few short stories mixed in... He actually has a degree in modern english & american lit. Fabulous.
Laurell Hamilton's first 8 Anita Blake books. (before the series turns into Buffy does St. Louis... ) The first one's called Guilty Pleasures. They first one is a bit slow, the series builds & gets progressively better until somewhere in book nine... Then, things just get out of touch...
and,
Rachel Caine - The Weather Wardens series. I'll wind is the first one. These are getting better & better. This will get you started. good luck

Laurel Hamilton's Anita Blake series is quite good. I would also recommend "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. Lastly, some similar themes are given a very interesting treatment in the Coldfire trilogy by C. S. Friedman.

For lighter, paranormal mysteries, try Douglas Adams' "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" and "Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul." They are quite funny, but "Tea Time" is a lot more coherent.

Expiration Date by Tim Powers
Basic premise: people trap ghosts in glass vials and then huff them like drugs, dissolving the ghost and gaining the deceased's life-force.

I agree with the Dean Koontz recommendation. His books are great. Try his Frankenstein trilogy, but you have to wait another year for the third book to come out. Pax - C
