She "lost" it 2 days ago, and is now driving me crazy! I am tempted to help her "find" it. How long will the bedtime screamong go on? and am I harming her by taking it away?

She will be 3 in July.

And for anyone who is unaware her binky is her pacifier.

I've been through this w/ 2 toddler's don't give in. Tell her she's a big girl and she's not getting it back. THROW it away so that you don't give in. She'll forget about it soon, it takes time to break a habit. Your doing the right thing, hang in there Mama!

I've seen kids older than that with one, it won't harm her not having it but your probably gonna be in a world of hurt for awhile unless you can figure out a way to distract her. So long as you don't give it back she should be over it in a few days, since all kids are different it's hard to say how long this will last.

It depends on the kid. It could take a few days- weeks. But your are so right by taking it away. And it will help her by taking it away. You can't have an older child still stuck to there binky :)

my daughter will be 4 in July and still has a binky. she's just a little girl, i don't think it so bad for her to still have a binky to go to sleep. If you are worried about her teeth and soft pallet like i am about my daughter, do not let her have it during the day(unless it's nap time) and when she falls asleep take it out of her mouth. I wouldn't make too big a deal out of this, limit her usage and eventually she will give it up when she is ready.

Unfortunately, I think you'll just have to deal with the screaming. If you give it back now, she'll see that if she screams long enough, you'll give in. You're not harming her by taking it away - in fact, you're probably helping her. She'll get over it sooner or later. That's one of the things that kinda sucks about being a parent - sometimes you have to do things that make you feel horribly guilty.

It's not hurting her. I know it's a night mare. That's usually the first addiction you have to break.

We chickened out and help ours find it a few times.

Before anybody frowns on that, they are 5 and 8 and they don't have binkies now.

dont give it back to her! i know its hard right now, but you will BE HAPPY that you got rid of it now instead of later...they are NOT GOOD for the development of teeth and they are just SO hard to get rid of....keep telling her that her binky is missing and she needs to help mommy find it to have it back...and if you cant find it, you will have to go to the store and get a teddy bear to have at night instead....eventually she will just forget about the binky!

Sorry, but she should have already had it "made to be lost".

If you don't let them learn to soothe themselves w/o a pacifier once they are old enough (and 3 is WAAYYYYY old enough) they will not be very effective in calming down on their own later --like in Kindergarten.

i dont think you are hurting her but did you take it away gradually? Like did she only use during the night? Anyway since you already took it away dont give in and give it back then you may never get it away from her. good luck i have a son

You're not harming her. Perhaps a new routine at bedtime should be introduced to take her mind off of it, like a story, a CD of lullabies, etc...
