Gold has a specific gravity of 19.3 while black sand, which is mostly Hematite, iron (II) oxide, has a specific gravity of 5.3. Gravity separation can still work, but the black sand and the gold need to be the same physical size. Sizing is done by screening into about five different sizes of -12, -20, -50, -100, and -200 mesh. The Gold can then be separated from each size fraction relying on its higher specific gravity. Equipment that can do this includes: concentrator bowls, spiral separators, and mini-sluices.
