About 2 years ago the new owners want to convert to condo's and they are making everyones life a living hell. When I moved in I made sure they accepted pets. They for some reason did not want to give a lease only month to month and promised me they would not raise my rent. YEA RIGHT! New owners called me up and left 3 letters on different occassions stating that I need to get rid of my dog or we must move. I freaked and called them and I said nobody is going anywhere my dog is part of our family. Now they want everyone to have every item on the balcony's completely empty not a plant in sight. They said it was a fire hazard. Then I called the new managers and they said the reason for that was they are having people look over the building to buy it . tenants had there rent raised 150.00 a month as soon as the lease was expired. Is this allowed we all think they are trying to get everyone to leave but they still are renting out ?

Once a lease expires they can raise the rent within whatever rent ordinances your district allows, if there are any restrictions.

Yes, they can make you clean your balcony and yes, fire hazard is legitimate.

If your dog is in your lease, they can't make you get rid of it.

New owners purchased the property as an investment, not to keep you happy. As unfair as it might seem, they might be making your life more "difficult" in an attempt to get you to move or buy the condo because there is more money in it for them. That's just the way business is.

This is a case of "The golden rule"....He who has the gold (apartment building) makes the rules.
Since you are on a month-to-month lease, they can pretty much make whatever rules they want for the next month.
They are only having tenants in there to help with cash flow until they can sell the whole thing.
They don't want a lot of stuff on the balconies as it detracts from the outside appearance.

Yeah, it's messed up but it's not illegal. They have to honor the contract you signed with the original owners for as long as it's valid. Once the old lease expires, they can make a new lease with new rules. If they're planning to convert to condos I'd suggest you start looking for another place.
