cough suppresants really don't work. doctors are hesitant to give it to young babies too although i don't really know why. have you tried using the steam from the shower? my daughter used to get dreadful coughs. i'd sit in the bathroom with her for 10 or 15 minutes at a time with the shower on as hot as it could be. eventually the small room would fill up with steam and help her breath just a little easier. give him as much water, juice, fluids of any kind that he will take becsue that also breaks up the cough.

Recent reports have shown that cough suppressants are useless and not worth giving. Try raising his mattress in his bed a little so he is not lying flat - this does help. Try using a steam vaporiser at night and sleep times as this keeps the air moist and helps with the coughing. This sounds weird but rub some VicksVapourub on his feet and then put sock on him - for some strange reason it does help to aliviate the coughing. When you or your partner have a shower take him in with you as the steam will help also.
Just remember that coughing is the natural way babies can clear any congestion off their chests - giving cough medicines only mask the problem, and delay recovery.
Best of luck and I hope he is feeling better soon.

Cough suppressant's are bad the alchahol in them can cause problems in a baby, and the cough is actually good for your baby to get stuff out. Raise the head of the bed (put a pillow or somthing under the mattress) use a vaporiser, check with your pediatrician about Vicks vapor rub or something like that.

I've always been told that you really don't want to give a baby cough medicine unless it's for night time to help the baby sleep since coughing can keep them up. Other than that I've been told that the baby is coughing for a reason and it's usually productive, so let them cough out what they need too.

did your son have that same cough when you took him to doctor first time? did the doctor notice the cough if not you need to call him and let them know what the cough sounds like you can use a cool mist humidifer running in his room also lift his head up when he is asleep but at 9mos you should let the doc tell you to give a cough suppressant hope he feels better soon

My OB/GYN says that PLAIN Robitussin is okay for chest congestion, and REGULAR Sudafed is okay for nasal congestion which can drip into the back of your throat causing you to cough. Be CAREFUL of taking cough drops, they can SOMETIMES be worse for your baby than cough medication. (It really just depends on what is in them.) Look I am 6 months along and am getting over the FLU, so I just went through ALL this with my doctor today. Do not listen to a pharmacist, listen to your OB - that is why he/she went to school to learn about pregnancy and delivery. Edit: I read some of the other comments and I too want to add that you must stay away from stuff that contains asprin and ibuprofin. Asprin can cause you to have prolonged labor, and ibuprofin is an anti-inflamatory that delays bone growth - which is not harmful to us whose bones are grown, but is VERY harmful to an unborn baby.

I would say no. I am not sure about HFMD but in most cases of cough for children, books and docs say No because it is in the best interest to cough stuff up, not keep it in. Definitely check with your doc about this before you do. I'd assume that if it was okay, they would have suggested it already.
Just out of curiousity, I did not know that one of the symptoms of HFMD was coughing? I thought that it was fevers, rashes, sore throat and mouth sores.

I would think it would be fine, I usually give it with tylenol, unless the baby is congested, then he would need to do some coughing in order to help loosen the flem. if so give him a cough with expectorant.
jusdt make sure to watch your dosage
