It is the ratio of the driveshaft (or transmission output shaft) to rear wheel revolutions. 3.5 revolutions of the driveshaft for each revolution of the wheel = 3.5:1 final drive ratio.

Fo FWD its trickier to figure out as there is no drivehaft per se.

higher numerical values ("lower gears" i.e 3.5:1 or 4:1) typically (but not always)give better acceration, lower top speed, worse gas mileage, better towing ability. Lower values (2.5:1 or 3:1) behave the opposite

The ratio of the driven gears to the ones that are doing the driving.

The lower the axle ratio (higher numbers such as 3:73. 3.90, 4.11, 4.33 4.46, 4.88 or 5.13), the faster the vehicle will accelerate from a standstill, but with a higher ratio (lower numbers such as 3.50, 3.23, 3.08, 2.90 or higher) the better the mileage of the vehicle

Usually means the ratio of the 'axle' and the last gear on the tranny. OD is usually a fraction (0.79:1) while direct is 1:1.
