I work at Barnes and Noble.

Today, I was arrested in my store for shoplifting at Target a few minutes prior. I wasn't working that day, I had a day off.

Will my employers fire me for being arressted in the store? Can they do that?

Barnes and Noble has a valuable reputation to think about. Yes Im sure you can and will be fired for shoplifting, that is a crime and they do have the right.

they might fire you because they feel you may shoplift from them. Were you employed by barnes and noble when you shoplifted from target? and if not, did you let them know that you got busted on your application. I am not sure if legally they have the right to fire you for your being arrested, but personally, i would not want a shoplifter to work in my store. (no offense dude)

if they find out they most definately will. if they call you into the office, be warned that they are about to fire your astealing ***. i doubt you'd be able to get another job soon. by the way, what did u steal?

I worked at my local VONS, so i know what it's like to work in retail. they let me go because i wasn't fast enough getting things for the customers. they often found things faster than i did. i wasn't surprised, but i was because it didn't take them long to let me go. they said i can come back and try again in a few months. that was a few months ago. i could try again, knowing what they want from me this time.

Well, it doesn't exactly qualify you for B&N employee of the month!

it might depend on what happens with your arrest.

But they can. if you were able to look in your employee handbook, if there were such a thing, I'd bet there was a clause about criminal activity.

but they might just reduce your hours to the point that you can't make any money and hope you'll quit.

They can. In most states they don't actually have to even have a reason for firing you, they can just fire you if they want to.

Will they? Probably. If you're tried and acquitted, you could try to talk them into rehiring you.
