If you make a partial payment and they accept it, they will have to reserve you for the balance due. However, many landlords will apply any payment toward late fees first, so if you pay $100 and your late fee is $100, you are still owing the entire rent.

Most landlords will work with you if you are reasonable. If you know you are going to be late, TELL THEM before rent is due and put in writing what you can pay and when you can pay it. They'd much prefer to do that and work with you than have to chase you down.
