This question has certainly brought out some silly answers.
Generally, older Japanese people are overtly racist towards foreigners in general, and blacks in particular. Mostly through ignorance, most have never met a black person.
The younger the people, the less likely they are to have these attitudes.
On one occasion, I took some Japanese colleagues to the US for a week of meetings. We were in a bar in San Carlos CA. One of the women said to me 'look, there's a black guy over there. Do you think he speaks English?'
I said 'more or less, he's American'.
As it happens, I knew the guy, and introduced them. An hour later, they were still drinking and chatting. She said later that she had no idea what he would be like, never having met anyone black. She thought he was a great guy, and didn't stop telling her friends and colleagues for quite some time.

This is a tough one, simply because the Japanese as a whole are not racist people, towards blacks at least. I think it is a bad representation, but not racist. Some of the things that you showed are of poor taste to say the least. But I also thing that the Dakkochan was kind of beautiful. I hate the moon child cartoon. I really do not know how to take this. I am not sure if it just ignorance, and poor taste, or just hate. Often the black population is misunderstood across the globe.

No. I'm Japanese and I'm really really racist to black people in the South, but it is because 99% of them really are lazy and all. But I certainly wouldn't be racist toward black people who live in Japan because knowing a black person would just be an advantage for absorbing interesting Western culture. They probably aren't racist to her, either. It's just that some Japanese people hate foreigners. The Japanese culture has always been and will probably always be homogeneous, and there just naturally isn't a place for foreigners to settle permanently because of what people believe.

Japan loves Michael Jackson! I have lived among many diverse cultures. I have a Japanese friend...I don't think they're all racist and prejudice like that. My friends father bought me a book (medical dictionary) I couldn't believe it...the first time he met me. My counsin's wife is also Japanese. I don't think as a whole they're racist. You really can't classify people as a whole.

yes most are especially older generation. i'm half black half asian and while i was living in japan a little kid asked me where my tail was. he asked me very seriously too. i know someone probably his grandpa or someone had told him this but i was so shocked. but i think that most japanese youth are moving away from this old view of racism because they are becoming more westernized.

Why does your friend think she can just walk into somebody else's country and tell them how to think about her? If the Japanese want to be racists, that's their business. If your friend does not approve of racism, let her stay away.
