Devil's Snare would be useful to protect a place - in mythology there are a lot of instances of plants, thorns, thickets, forests, getting in the way of a hero and his goal.

In Order of the Phoenix, the Devil's Snare was useful for dark purposes, to kill Broderick Bode, who had gone insane after attempting to get the prophecy for Voldemort (probably under the imperius curse). He was regaining his sanity and could have eventually divulged the truth, when someone sent him a Devil's Snare cutting that strangled him in his sleep... the anonymity of the murder makes it preferable to someone rushing into St. Mungos and Avada Kedavraing the man.

No, thats only in the movie, in the book the Devil's Snare tries to kill them, untill Hermy saves them.

It would be useful to throw at an enemy! lol.

to catch you if you fall through a trap door after putting a three headed dog to sleep with a magic harp. But then you need to know how to just relax and fall through. At least you didn't hit the ground hard though ;-)
