The definition I am familiar with has nothing to do w/ folklore & mythology.

Spooning is the act of two people lying on their sides, with one person's front to the other person's back, such that they fit together in a manner similar to spoons.

I suppose, being an elder, I am the only person that remembers as folks early in the last century had a completely different meaning for spooning.

To spoon or spooning was was flirtatious courting with a lot of sentimentalism and near foolishly amorous Males. In those days three of the most used words in Tin-Pan-Alley were Moon, June, and spoon. One of the Big song was "By The Light of The Silvery Moon," and it contained the words "With my honey I'll spoon,"

I guess those days have drifted into Folklore as realities replaced Romanticism.

I agree with the nestling explanations and with the "elders" (of which I am one) saying it was a dating term. I have also heard it used in music as an impromptu percussion accompaniment of two spoons set back to back and clattered against the knee or hand of the person playing them.

The previous answers are all correct. In addition to that, spooning has now taken on a new meaning for men in prison. Apparently, it involves a very painful and menacing sexual attack. So don't go to jail!!!

Lol, its when you're laying down with your significant other (hopefully) and one person is holding the other (both facing the same way)--like a spoon shape!!

It can mean lying together so that one person's back is "nested" up against the other person's front. It can also mean any sort of cuddling, particularly of the romantic version - it doesn't have to be in a bed. That's sort of an old-fashioned term, but I still hear it occasionally :-)
