Was Jimmy Carter's preoccupation with human rights and the deescalation of Cold War rhetoric realistic in light of Soviet activities in Afghanistan?

Jimmy Carter did what he thought was right, but to be president of the US, one needs intestinal fortitude. He boycotted the Olympics and had a wheat embargo on the Soviets. Meanwhile Japan was buying the wheat and re-selling it to the Soviets. Ho hum...life goes on.

I guess not. I mean, we did go on to 'win' the Cold War, and human rights are still being violated like crazy around the world.
