Unless your nature lover you just wouldn't get it. Yes, a fish in a small bowl of water is rather dull. but.....

After an annoying day at work, it's very, very relaxing to come home turn out all the house lights, turn on the tanks light sit with a glass of red and watch my fish in my large tanks, (I have 13 tanks), swim and chase and play with each other. Round the plants and in and out of logs/rocks. Better than the tv and watching Ads. You also have the pleasure of knowing those fish are only healthy due to your care and maintence. Learning about how they breed and watching the lil cute fry grow up. (you can also make enough money to support your hobbie). They DO have a personality. My Red Devil will follow me to one end of the tank to the other, then wait for me to enter the room again.

They don't need walks, easy to feed, and care for. If your good enough, you don't have expensive vet bills. You can leave them for a weekend (with food) and they wont pee on the rug. (mind you I have 2 cats as well). :)

If you don't like fish. Don't get one. Easy!

Its a hobby :)
I enjoy setting up the fish tank, I enjoy shopping for new fish, I enjoy maintaining the tank and re-arranging or redecorating the tank. I enjoy the satisfaction of being able to keep the fish healthy and happy. Its a nice addition to my home in terms of decoration, and yes, I even enjoy sitting down every once in a while and watching them swim around :)

So do my cats :)
Whos with me?! HUZZAH!

EDIT: I also agree with many of the posts above...it is very relaxing. You wouldnt understand unless you were a pet person :)

Why post something like this on a forum to get a bunch of people riled up? Either for entertainment or maybe you are so close minded you truly cant see why people would have a pet fish :)
Either way...enjoy the show :)

Not*all* day. :P

You just have to be a fish person. I've found fish to be more work than larger animals, actually, but I can just assume that people like me love the "kick" they get from all the work. There's a lot more to the fish world than putting a fish in a bowl of water: you have to take in account the size of the aquarium, the quality of the water, plants, decoration, which types of fish you want to put in it...many people equate fishkeeping to art, and certainly tons of people appreciate a nicely decorated aquarium. Think of your dentist's office...

What interesting things would feel like doing if your entire world was a small, featureless bowl? I have 5 large Commons & Comets in a big tank & they play all day tumbling over one another, nuzzling the stones, surfing the filter outlet current, ripping up the plants, swimming in & out the caves, chasing each other at incredible speeds, taking food from my hand & snuggling down with one another to sleep in their favourite spots at night-I learn from them all the time.

LOL.

I do not have a fish bowl.

I have three actual tanks. A 33, 40 and 46 gallon.

It's relaxing to watch them.

My fish are weird. I can actually "pet" one of them and the others "kiss" my finger when I put it in their water.

My fantail, Nala, will swim right into my palm when I stick my hand in the water to arrange their tank decorations and nuzzle up to me. Weird isn't she?

Then SImba, my common goldfish, and Tipu, my shubunkin, will suck on my finger or my sister's finger when we stick it in there to play with them.

So, you can have fun with a fish.

A beta seems to be basic to guard, yet you could no longer positioned extra effective than one in a tank. There are not alot of fish that don't prefer the air device, however. i think of goldfish and betas are the only ones that are comfortable with out them. i do no longer comprehend in case you could positioned betas and goldfish jointly however.
