I have him in the tank now and wanted to know should he be fed right away or wait a day for him to get use to his new surroundings. And also what is the best food for him. This is my first puffer and want to know what is best to keep his beak filed down!! Thanks in advance!!

I usually wait a day after bring home a new fish before trying to feed them. That'll give them time to settle into a new home. It's also not a bad idea to do this with puffers, since they're sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so any uneaten food would only contribute to those, and you'll only stress your fish more tossing food into the tank, only to net it out later.

Puffers generally like meaty foods (shrimp, squid, crabs, snails, cockles, clams, etc.), but it's important to give some of these with the shell one so they trim they beak while feeding. And it's best to offer them some variety, so they get a better mix of nutrients in their diet than they would only feeding on one item.

See this link for more about what they should be getting as part of their diet: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/library/feeding/feeding-your-puffers/
