1. Jim Brown (he had no offensive line, and retired during his prime. He also played in seasons with only 12 and 14 games in them.

2. Walter Peyton, he is the only runningback who could stay with his team his whole career, and not retire during his prime that was acually good. His numbers were always consistant, and he won a superbowl

3. Barry sanders is almost exacitally like Jim Brown, he had no offensive line, and retired in his prime, but his runs were not consistant. He had the most negative yardage runs of all time. He would have like 2 runs for negative yards, and then break a 20-30 yard run. This is great and all, but not consistant, which is why I put him #3

4. Tony Dorrsett was an amazing runningback, and from my scorces he was the first runningback ever to run for over 2,000 yards. He also set the record for most rushing yards in a season. He was an amazing back, and was #4 all time

5. I was considering a couple including Eric Dickerson, Gayle Sayers, and Marshall Faulk for this spot, but I am going to give it to Emmitt Smith. I absolutly HATE this guy, because i think he is SOOOOOOOOOOOO overrated. He had on of the best offensive lines in history, and an amazing team to win him superbowls, but he has the all time rushing record, as well has rushing TD record, and no matter what, you have to be good to do that.

Jim Brown was the best RB ever. He dominated the league for years. He had all the records and quit after nine seasons. He could have played at least five more years but had nothing to prove.

Walter Payton was the best football player ever. He could run, throw, and kick. For all of his running numbers he was a better blocker.

Tony Dorsett had great numbers which would have been even better except he played on a well balanced Cowboys team.

John Riggins has big stats but also played a total game.

Red Grange was before my time but I have been told by people in Chicago that he would have been formidable in any era. The Galloping Ghost made $100,000 a year which would be like $20 million now.

1 - Gale Sayers
2 - Sweetness (W. Payton)
3 - Jim Brown
4 - Barry Sanders
5 - Earl Campbell

Honorable mention - Larry Csonka, no numbers to back it up, but just a tough player. I'll take him on a 3rd and 1, 3rd and 2 along with any of the 5 mentioned.

1. shocker, but i have to say bo jackson
he wasnt a full time nfl player, but damn. i have never seen another running back with that combination of size and speed. he could be a bruiser between the tackles and had extreme breakaway speed. he could easily run around defenders but often chose the quicker route: right through them

2. barry sanders - if he didnt retire early would be yards leader

3. walter payton - so dominating and so big
4. jim brown - the original dominating back
5. ladanian tomlinson - is so fast and elusive, yet powerful. has a great stiff arm. his size makes you think otherwise, but he is one of the best red zone backs ever. he can catch very well as he has had a 100 reception season. i expect him to move into at least the top 2 and maybe pass bo on my list
