Its certainly a learned behaviour, no-one is born ignorant and stupid.
The learning to hate can come from parents, friends or bad experiences.

I have to agree with the folks above in that it's probably the environment of the "racists" (bigots).

*I am a very fit, "tough" (according to "ex" wife, friends, coworkers, students, former criminal defense law clients, etc.) looking, articulate Latino male.

**EVERY TIME I go to the emergency room, doctor's office, dentist with my kids, I get dirty looks, and am treated as if I somehow abused my children.

***My kids even ask me what's wrong with these people.

**When I was in the emergency room for myself (a rather LARGE kidney stone), I was denied treatment even though I was writhing in pain on the floor of the emergency room twice.

***Even when I was finally accepted into treatment, I was treated substandardly (political prisoners in most places are tortured with more dignity ...).

*Every time I go to a professional seminar (I teach public school), it's almost mind boggling how poorly I'm treated before I even have the chance to greet anyone.

So I guess bigotry transcends the undereducated, "tobaccky- chawin'", unscrubbed redneck image one normally associates with bigots here in the U.S.

Each of the above, ongoing instances of maltreatment was perpetrated by those people with advanced university degrees.

Oh well ...

Something like that. Children learn morals (or lack thereof) from their parents. If the parents believe racism is okay, the child will feel the same.

Their parents are the main source but I think that the environment they grow in and the friends they have also has a lot to do with it.

Hey sweetpea, I think quite a few were but I think others become racist because they want to feel like they are the superior race..in other words it makes them feel better by putting others down.

Most people are what they are because of what they learned by observation growing up. Unless we examine why we believe the things we believe, we are only the product of our upbringing.

some can be
but all in all i think its the person themselves.. i know people in racist backgrounds but they are nothing like that.
like for instance, my friend simon (chinese).. his mum doesnt like me because im not chinese.. and she can speak english but around me she is so rude and wont speak a word of it. and his nan also doesnt like me because im white and not chinese.. and she doesnt even speak a word of english so its not like ive said something wrong.
its the persons choice on whether they go for their own views or stick to views around them.

lol posted this and simons the one above.. HELLO :)

Well I don't think anybody is born with hate. You learn it from the people around you,
