This is actually explained in the books.
The book WAS 50 years old. It was owned by Snapes mother "Miss Prince" in the time of Voldemort. When Miss Prince married Mr. Snape they had a son named Severus. Severus is half blood - Miss Prince was a witch, Mr. Snape was a muggle.
Severus Snape went on to attend Hogwarts and study Potions. His mother gave him a hand me down book and he wrote his name in it. Because he was ashamed of his muggle father, he was proud to be a Half Blood Prince..... he'd rater be a half blood Prince than use the last name Snape because it was from his muggle father. Of course, he can't change his last name because that would show his discrimination.
That's how it is explained in the book.
And yes, Voldemort IS half blood, but He is half Riddle and half of whatever Merope and Marvole's last name was (and I'm sorry, I can't remember off hand)

You're probably right, the book didn't originally belong to Snape, I agree with one of the previous answerers that the book probably belonged to Snape's mother, Eileen Prince. The name works for Snape because he's half blood, his father, Tobias Snape was a muggle and his mother was a witch. He used the name 'Prince' because that was the maiden name of his mother.

the book is 50 years old because snape got second hand books. it was already old when he got it. it is his because his mother's maiden name was prince. why would voldemort have written "prince" in there and even tho he is a half blood he would NEVER admit that, none of his death eaters even know that. (much like hitler who was half jewish...hmmm)

You're right, Severus Snape could not have been the original owner of that book, and congratulations to you for thinking about it!
I rather suspect that it was originally his mother's, not Tom Riddle's.

it was snape b/c his mother married a muggle, so he was half blood, and his mothers maiden name was prince. he gets half-blood b/c hes half-blood and prince b/c that was his mothers maiden name.
voldemort was half-blood 2, but his mothers maiden name wasnt prince. promise.
on the 50 yrs old part, snape isnt 50, but books can have multiple owners! (duh!!!). it was probably his mothers.

i know, it said that it couldn't have been one of james's friends in his same year because it was published 50 years ago. i was a little confused but just went with it. but that is a really good theory, i would have never thought of that.

At this point, until July 21, who cares? It is all speculation and rumor and JK Rowling herself has asked for this to stop. Pax -C
