First off ignore half of these posters replies! Apparently they know nothing about Betta's! Betta's are peaceful in a Community tank as long as they do not get bullied by other fish. DO NOT put a female Betta in with the male. The tank is too small and it is alot more to raising fry than just breeding Betta's. Anyway on to your question..
I wouldn't put anything else in the tank. That is just enough room for a Betta to live in. Place a few plants in there and he will thrive in that tank as long as you do the proper water changes. Good Luck!
P.S. Here are some links about Betta fish..maybe some of the posters will also read them and learn a little more about them before answering a question that is incorrect.

I wouldn't try that. First of all, your aquarium is just big enough for that betta (there's that rule where you should allow one gallon per inch of fish--and since bettas are around two inches, maybe more, a 2.5 gallon aquarium is just right), so I wouldn't press it. And you wouldn't be doing your betta any favors by getting him some tankmates, either.
Odds are, one of two things will happen:
1.) He'll attack it. Even when betta fish are added to community tanks, they're supposed to be the LAST fish added because they're so territorial. Putting a fish in the tank after the betta has established his territory is a death wish.
or 2.), The fish will attack it. As a matter of fact I had introduced my betta into my community tank a few months ago. Just last week I noticed he was behaving oddly--spending most of his time lying on my piece of driftwood, looking rather, er, dead Then I noticed his fins were very torn looking... turns out my tetras had been picking at him, which is exactly what people had been telling me to look out for from the beginning. Now he's on the road to recovery in his own five gallon tank, but I don't plan to try that again!
On another note, I had once attempted to let a betta and two African Dwarf Frogs co-exist in a tank, a few years ago. I don't recall ever seeing much trouble between them, but the ADFs did die... although I always assumed this was because I didn't feed them properly. Still...
By the way, the 2.5 gallon aquarium setup for bettas has alway worked very well for me, so I salute you in the doing the same!

I believe that 2.5 gallons is too small to put another fish in with the betta.
I have had a betta in a ten gallon tank with platies and mollies though and it worked out well.

Betta fish are only terratorital with other bettas or aggresive african fish.
You will be fine if you have other fish like a guppy or a female betta in there with him.
You need to ask the fish store if the fish you choose need a heater - some fish will die within hours if they are a tropical fish & need a heater. A betta does NOT need a heater, but any new one may & you would want to stay away from adding those fish and stay with a guppy or small gold fish.

In a tank that small a companion would not be good for your betta. They would compete for space and it wouldn't be good for either fish.

Betta’s can be coupled with algae eaters, guppies, or corydorus catfish safely. Do NOT, however, put another betta in the same tank.

I would not put anything in there with him. Number one they get along just fine by themselves and also your tank isn't big enough for several fish. He will be just fine by himself but i would look to get him some type of plant life to put with him.

Don't worry about loneliness. It's what they do. Concentrate on giving the fish the best care (water conditions and diet).

Do not introduce any more fish into this tank. This Beta has very little tank space to spare and then too he may catch and kill other fish in this small tank.
