The color loss was probably because the fish was stressed. He'll probably gain it back eventually, as long as only the one rock was swallowed. This is a common enough occurrance it even has a name - rockitis: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm

The problem with bubble cheeks is they don't see very well, and will pick up anything from the bottom thinking it's food. The marbles will help as long as they're too big for him to get into his mouth. Eventually, he's going to need a larger tank, even though bubble-eyes are one of the smaller varieties of goldfish (around 5").

I agree with the poster above, I think it was stress. Their color can change according to their stress level, although I've never seen one lose all of its color. Once he calms down, it should come back.

As for the rock, you should probably put larger gravel in there, pieces that the fish can't pick up and try to swallow.

Good luck, hope your fish gets better!

LOL. I have a bubble cheek too. How the heck did you pull the rock out?...............ANYWAYS, I don't think you should have touched the fish. Maybe it's frightenened........I don't know because this has never happened before. Maybe you should ask for help with a vet. MOST, Petco employees tell false info......odd I know....don't ask them though....

Well you need to know all gravel starts out white, then they paint it, so your fish probably just got id of the color.
