First, USC played Auburn twice in the last five years, and won both games. There are teams out there that play easy schedules, USC atleast plays Notre Dame every year. But I will address this question conference by conference.
Pac 10: We must alwyas give credit to USC. Top to bottom the Pac has never been a tough conference. The history of the league is that it has always been top heavy. USC, Washington, and UCLA. The Golden Bears and Ducks recent success is just that. Recent....
Big 10: If any conference might, and I stress MIGHT be on the level of the SEC. It would be these guys. Although I am not sure why this guy felt it was a good idea to mention Wisconson in the elites. Wisconson has always failed when they receive major hype. Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State are A+ programs. PSU sort of fell off the last few years, but nothing can ever be taken away from that tradition.
Big 12: Looks close to the same at the Big 10. OU, Nebraska Texas and Colorado. After that you get a serious downgrade . The quote above about all the championships is not fair. Nebraska won the majority of those championships. Take those away OU and Texas have one each over the last 20 years. (I do not count Colorado's title in 90 because of the 5th down against Mizzou) Nebraska ran the show for years, and I mean ran it. Oklahoma can hardly brag after being asleep for 18 years. Colorado just lost to a D-II school. So much for tradition.
ACC: This conference is rising with VT, Miami additions. But, for years it was the FSU show. Before those three ever came it was the Georgia Tech/Clemson show, two very B teams. The rest are doormats.
Big East: HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The SEC has two of the all time winning bowl teams Alabama/Tennessee.... Alabama, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, have all had national titles over the last 15 years. (Auburn went undefeated twice as well, yet was left out of the voting)
The flagship Ohio State program is WINLESS all time against SEC teams in bowl games. That is a stat that cannot be escaped. The SEC is the only conference NOT to lose a BCS title game. LSU, Florida, and Tennessee all won their shot at the title.
Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, and Tennessee all rank top 25 wins all time. No other conference has that sort of boast.
The most telling stat...... Everyone compares themselves to the SEC. You never hear anyone compare themselves to any other league.
Auburn and Tennessee opened the year against two Pac 10 teams in 2006. California was ranked 9th in the country and placed 2nd at seasons end in the PAC...
Tennessee who went 9 and 4, beat California 35 to 18. The score was 35-0 in the 3rd quarter when Tennessee started playing reserves. Arkansas a very weak team in 2003, managed to travel to Austin, Texas and beat the Longhorns. Before coming back and losing several games in the SEC.
I can go all night with this because the answer is obvious. The SEC sets the bar. Others might polish ther Heisman's, but they always seem to get beat for it later.

I'm tired of hearing about how the Big 10 or the Pac 10 has won more championships than the SEC in the last 10 or 20 years. That is the point of this discussion,if Auburn,LSU,or Florida was not in the SEC you would have had 3 12-0 teams last year.Matter of fact LSU wouldn't have lost in at least 3 or 4 years. The whole conference is full of teams that are very good teams.Georgia in2005 are the only SEC champs to lose their Bowl in a while.

I agree, Tom. Any1 who doesn't is biased or unaware of the facts. The SEC has 6 of the top 25 teams of all time by winning %. More than any other conference. Since 1933 (the year the SEC was founded) they have won more national titles (21) than any other conf. They have a winning record against every major conference except the Big 10. They r 87-94 against them but if u know that 62 of those losses were by Vandy, Kntky, Ol Miss, Miss St and South Crlina it's not impressive. Against the cream of the SEC (the other 7 teams) the Big 10 won 32 and lost 51. They also have a winning record against every major conference except the Pac 10 and they are tied with them. If there are still any doubters go to cfdatawarehouse and check out the conferences. Since 1933 the SEC was the conference of the decade every time but one. They were an easy choice for the best overall conference. And 4 all u who say the SEC plays a weak schudule; U try playing Tennesee, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas etc. each week and see what your winning % looks like.

the reason why USC doesnt schedule games like that is because they have nothing to gain from it. they have to play their Conference games, and the quality of the teams in the conference added to the quality of the teams that they schedule as non-conference games (ND, ARK) because of traditon or otherwise are enough to provide very high strength of schedule rankings. The SEC elite teams use the same strategy. and the reason why any powerhouse team doesnt willingly choose to face another powerhouse team from a different conference is that there is too much to lose in the current BCS system. and to answer the rest of the question. i usually hear the media say that the SEC is one of the better conferences. ACC is a basketball-strong conference if i remember correctly. and i believe the Pac-10 is very strong but often over-hyped at the begining of the season. im a arizona state fan and i get excited every preseason when they are ranked in the top 20 and then out of it for the rest of the season after the first game... besides LSU and Florida, SEC didnt really have a strong showing.. georgia tanked.. this year at least..

SEC is the strongest conference in the nation. it had 6 teams that were ranked in the top 25 at the end of the season, including bowl games. thats saying something about how competitive the SEC is. its impossible to go undefeated. Florida had one loss, which was to auburn, and then went on to absolutely steamroll ohio state in the national championship.

sec is the strongest conference the guy who is talkin about the most national titles ,well when you play competion like the sec its almost impossible to go undefeated unlike teams outside the sec playing weaker teams so they get the bid to play for the title instead of the sec school who played better teams ,floridas thumping of OSU proved the sec is the superior conference

Besides the fact that you're failing to realize that these schools sign contracts years in advance with other schools and media outlets to produce rated games and revenue actually making the whole sport a big business for their school, the PAC 10 routinely produces top flight talent across the board year in and year out, making it a good arguement for the the finest conference in the NCAA.
