Seriously, could someone (hopefully nurse or Doc) tell me what is the difference for lipid profile with alcohol in the system versus none. My friend is having this test, he dosen't drink during the day, just a couple at night before bed.
He's suppose to refrain from it for 48hrs prior to the test but I have a feeling he won't do that. What significance will this have on the results. Will it be major or minor. I would appreciate an answer in the next day.
Thanks in advance
No lectures please

Ideally, blood for a lipid profile is drawn after an overnight fast, preferably 12 - 14 hours. This is necessary, since chylomicrons, tiny fatty droplets enter the blood stream after a meal and interfere with some of the tests on the profile. After 12 hours or so the liver has removed most of the chylomicrons from the blood.

Lipids are not soluble in blood or water, but they are soluble in alcohol. I cannot tell you if an elevated blood alcohol level would alter the lipid profile results. I suppose it can, hence the recommendation to abstain prior to the test.

Most of the literature on the effects of alcohol on the lipid profile deal with chronic alcohol use and abuse.

Well, the doctors will take a sample of his fat tissue and analyze it for amounts of alcohol. He's supposed to refrain from drinking for 48 hours, but you say that he won't. Well, obviously that's going to have a significant result on the test. He will have a much higher amount of alcohol in his system compared to a person who, let's say, hasn't had a drink since New Year's Eve. Actually, even if he abstains from drinking for the 48 hours, his test results will probably still show a much higher amount.
