I have to make a speech to eight hundred teenagers this summer, not including all of the adults that will be there as well.
I normally avoid public speaking like the plague but I can't back out of this one...do you have any tips for me to not be so nervous or figity when I speak?
Also, what should I wear? It's not a formal conference but I want to look nice... (I'm a female, if that helps at all...)

If I were you I would still wear a suit. it will make you feel confident and others will look at you with authority.

Also, don't look at anyone directly. Look down at the crowd and "appear" to make eye contact but never actually look at one person for more than a couple seconds. This will keep your mind moving and help calm the nerves.

First of all, try saying your speech to a couple of friends and close family members. That might help you overcome some of your fears of public speaking. That worked for me. Also, you could try to practice in front of a mirror. Secondly, since the conference isn't formal it is better to look nice. May I suggest no flashy jewelry and maybe a simple dres is nice with a little bit of light make up.

Try to dress a Little more modern than normal, unless of course you are already modern chick. Casual but nice. Comfortable. Kids are sponges but a little hard to get to at first. Don't try cracking jokes or anything, they will eat you up. Be precise, honest, slightly loud and extremely honest. And above all, know your stuff, they can spot a fake it till you make a mile away. For nervousness, keep a bent paperclip in you hand. Bend it so that you can poke yourself a little poke on another finger secretely, it will help you focus as well. Sounds kinda dumb but it works.

Make sure you practice your speech alot before you actually do it, being greatly prepared will give you some confidence, as far as dress I was always told to dress one level above what the audience will be wearing
