You said it best: It was a fiasco and a major blunder by the Kennedy administration. Countless people lost their lives on that little blunder because Kennedy did not want to fully commit. It made America look weak and Kruschev tried to exploit that weakness by placing Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Had Kennedy stuck to his guns and committed resources and manpower that was set up for the invasion, Fidel Castro would have been removed from power and the Cuban Missile Crisis would have never happened. It was a MAJOR foreign policy blunder.

The Bay of Pigs fiasco should never have happened given the poor preparation and planning and the poor intelligence that suggested the Cuban people would rise up against Castro.

There are some that theorize the intelligence agencies and the military presented this to Kennedy knowing it would fail. They hoped that upon it's failure, Kennedy would committ to sending in US forces to rescue the plan.

If there was such a plot, it failed because Kennedy never did this. However it was a stain on his presidency ever since.

Kennedy got bad intelligence from the CIA. The thought was that the populace would greet with open arms their liberators and join the fight against Castro. (sounds familiar)

The difference between Bush and Kennedy is that Kennedy accepted the blame. He also never trusted the CIA after that.
