I think that they purposely do it so that people get frustrated, and therefore won't come back to get that particular thing that was forgotten. Then...when those people who pretend like they didn't get something they ordered go through the drive-thru and get "free food", they're really getting the other people's forgotten food. Thus, the company doesn't make less of a profit because the people who paid for the food originally actually just paid for the punks who lie and get free food. That's my theory.

It's because we have other things that we're doing besides worrying about one specific order. We do our best, we really do, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Plus, if a teenager decides they want a new job, they're gone. So there are constantly new trainees that we're working with. We aren't all bilingual (though I am, with English as a FIRST language), uneducated, lazy bums. Some of us are actually trying to hold a job so that we can PAY for college and an education, thanks. And "don't worry about their timer thingy?" Sure, I understand, you can check your bag real quick. But PLEASE don't sit there and pass out food or open up your burrito right on the drive thru pad. If there is a mistake, drive in the circle and walk inside real quick. At Taco Bell, if we mess up, we'll remake it for you and probably give you a cinnamon twists to boot. Sometimes our pay is determined by how those timers look. Our whole crew has been denied raises because some jerks took too long in the drive thru just jacking around. Besides that, there are people waiting behind you for their food too. Don't waste their time.

So, to summarize my answer to this question- It's basically because we're human. All due respect, would you like to come and do our job for us? We are doing the BEST we can, I promise. :)

I guess I'm in the minority because that only happened three times to me *2 Mc Donalds..different ones and a BK*. Don't most drive through's now have a screen that prints out your order so you can see that it's right? Not saying that the runner isn't going to get it right, though. It happens, but not too much with me *and one of the times at McDonalds they told me I could keep the wrong order along with the right one*

its not always. just most of the time. It's not always the easiest to hear what the customer is saying. Those speakers aren't the greatest.
EDIT:
I don't see how so many of you are calling these people that serve you uneducated and lazy! Pretty much every teenagers first job is at a fast food place. Don't blame it on the people working. I blame it on you...the people who would rather sit on their fat a$ses in their expensive car and go through the drive thru instead of getting up and going in!

It doesn't happen too often since they always repeat the order when I do it. But my theory is, it's hard to hear through those microphones used in the drive thru, so things get lost during the order transmission.

Carelessness!

The managers need to preach that get the order right even if it takes a bit longer.

I have been at a Jack In The Box location near me. They have messed up the same burger order the last 4 times.

That only happens when I order stuff for more than one person. If it's just me everything is usually fine. My best guess is that they can't handle too much stuff at one time, especially with the added pressure of having to hand it through a window and all. Traumatizing.

lol...I use to laugh at questions like these. The aweser is simple. (And I am not racist)
Teenagers that work there and most are lazy blacks or mexicans.

How to not let this happen: SPEAK UP! ASk them (They should) to repeat the order. BEFORE driving off, Check to make sure you have everything. Don't worrie about there time thinger..not your problem. Or..Just Go inside.

I agree with you. They always mess up my order too. I suspect they hire young people with things on their mind other than work ethics.
