I have a lot of Christian friends who seem really judgemental of minority groups that don't meet their "moral standards", such as gay people. The problem is, I'm quite the opposite. Is it hypocritical of me to be angry of their intolerance?

no, its hard to deal with ignorance when it gets in your face. the old dilemma of using violence to prevent violence. at least you are enlightened enough to see the problems instead of being one of the mindless group and going along with the ignorance

Not really, since there is more than one kind of intolerance. People who hate and judge for no good reason (just because they think their 'holy book' tells them to be that way doesn't make it true) are practicing the bad, destructive kind of intolerance. Not tolerating this behavior is a good, constructive variety.

Likewise, police who lock up criminals are being intolerant of their behavior, and doctors who are intolerant of diseases are doing good work, are they not?

Labeling intolerance as always bad is in the same category as labelling negativity always bad, as the world isn't that simple. Consider just two well-known lists which contain things you should not do: the Ten Commandments (both sets) and the Bill of Rights!

By the definition of the word hypocritical, yes you would be a hypocrite. Rather then being intolerant of people who are intolerant of others, why don't you just ignore it? They're not worth your energy, anyway.

"Angry"........really!! When it reaches the level of Angry then you have become the intolerant one. You want people to be tolerant of others but yet YOU are not tolerant of people who disagree with you. How tolerant is it of you to be "Angry" at people for following their own moral code? Is that not the definition of intolerance?

Speaking of "moral standards" is that not what you are asking others to do........to bend their moral standards to meet your moral standards which you consider to be higher than than their moral standards. It is a psuedo intellectual version of "holier than thou"........my moral standards are higher and more worthy than your moral standards therefore you are judgemental and I am "holier than you".

I doubt any of this registers with you. But you did ask the question so something must be working on your conscience.

OBTW!! Don't pull that homophobe crap on me. My oldest son was gay and died of AIDS. We never accepted his life style but we never quit loving him either. His God Fearing Father and Mother and Grandfather and Sister were with him when he took his last breath. But absolutely none of your so called non judgemental tolerant crowd bothered to show up. So don't pull that Homophobe crap on me. I have paid my dues.

Yes it is. Those beliefs they have are part of who they are and a part of their culture. If you can't cope with their views then you should find yourself other friends from your own culture (assuming you have one) or at least people who believe similar things to you.

Yes. You want them to accept your opinions than you have to accept theirs.

Agree to disagree if you want to stay friends.
