You have to bump into those pillars to stun him and make the boomerang hit him and make him fall to the ground. Once he is on the ground, hit him with the sword. Keep doing this until a bug falls out of him and he stands up confused - he will look at Link then run away. He will show up later at the boss and help, but I won't say how if you want to know what happens.

You have to beat that one large monkey like the others said, but before that, you have to get two more monkeys for a total of four. Check the surrounding areas several times. To get the boomerang, you have to beat the oversize ape. :)
