It's often noted that most of our recent presidents were previously governors. What profession do you think makes the best presidents? Don't go by any particular past president or current candidate. Just answer generally. Rank governors, senators, vice presidents, generals, and businessmen. Ties are allowed. Also say whether you're a Republican or Democrat.

My pick would be:
Generals would be the best, then businessmen, then a tie between governors and senators, then vice presidents are the worst. I'm a Republican.

Governors and Generals both have experience as executives. A Legislator has experience passing laws and knows the Beltway players.

I prefer the executive background as that is what the President's job description is. He is responsible for all the various departments and agencies whereas a legislator at best influences the process as a single member of a larger body.

That is not to say every governor is a good executive. I am a Republican.

Of the two, Governors.

Vice Presidents, in theory, know the demands of the job very well, but they're often chosen for qualities that the presidential candidate feels will complement, and not overshadow, his own. Thus, for instance, they might lack some of the assertiveness or charisma you'd want from a President.

Generals can be a good choice, they're used to the responsibility of leadership. But, civilians don't take direct orders too well.

Businessmen might well have leadership qualities and organizational & financial skills, but running a business and running a country are very different things.

I am a republican or constitution party member. I believe that senators or congressmen make better presidents than governors. They have more experience in how the process in making and passing laws works. They know the people in place and their power or beliefs. They know the ins and outs of the system. Governors have no experience in all of this. They are more tuned into their own state. Just my insights.

I feel that Governors make the best Presidents. If you think about it, it is the same job on a much smaller scale. Also, it helps the candidates because they do not have a national voting record.

Rank

Governors
Businessmen
Senators
Vice Presidents

Let's briefly analyze the question. Abe Lincoln our greatest president was a Senator and our second greatest president, Franklin Roosevelt was a governor but not a senator. Our second worst president, James Buchanan was a senator and our worst president, George W. Bush was a governor but not a senator. From this analysis I would say it makes no difference.
