This is from the Experience of a Long Term Single Parent -- who had children of EACH Gender in Scouting and other activities, and there were other organizations which did this as a fun family activity:

FIRST you need to look at the age of the participants -- if they are toddlers/young elementary school -- only 5 items for the youngest up to 10 items (base your estimate on the number of fingers on their hands -- and don't make it too complicated!)

Second -- for those late elementary to middle school age -- about 10 to 15 items -- you can make the range (area) larger, and the instructions more complicated, but within their abilities.

Third -- for Teenagers (High School) -- about 15-20 items -- and the search area for the items can expand, with instructions that are more complicated (maybe in rhyme? Puns?)

Fourth -- Adults -- about 20-25 items -- anything more and your adults will be bored in the hunt.

Finally -- with families -- a mix of all above -- some specifically easy to find (for the toddlers/young children), some middle range, and some hard to find items (or puns that they need to figure out).

That is what I'd use as a rule of thumb for a Scavenger Hunt Listing for any social event.

I agree with the previous answers about the number of items on the list...I would like to add that you should watch what TIME you are having the hunt. We once had the door bell ring about 10:30 at night on a week night, all our lights were out and we were watching TV in the dark. My dogs just about came unglued when the door bell rang. It was a group of about 20 middle school kids with one adult doing a scavenger hunt. I told them it was too late for that.

Should be relative to the number of people who are going to be hunting. Maybe.

At least 10-20 items?

As many as you have time to find.Set a time and actually try to find them yourself so you can see if the clues need to be harder or easier.
