Republicans Continue to Play Politics With Right to Vote
Washington, DC - Yesterday, Democrats united to defeat a harmful
Republican amendment that would have imposed a highly restrictive voter
ID law. The amendment to the Senate immigration reform bill would have
created a modern day poll tax which could disenfranchise millions of
Americans, specifically seniors, minorities, youth, urban and rural
voters and persons with disabilities. All of these groups are less
likely to have government issued photo ID's and would be forced to bear
an unnecessary burden just to exercise their fundamental right to vote.
The defeat of this amendment comes on the heels of recent revelations
that the Bush Administration attempted to pressure U.S. Attorneys to
pursue politically motivated cases of voter fraud, despite evidence
showing no proof of widespread voter fraud. As part of their consistent
pattern of putting partisan interests ahead of the people's business,
the Bush Administration and the Republican National Committee have led a
coordinated campaign to undermine voting rights over the past five
years.
"The American people were the real winners last night when Democrats
stood up and defeated Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's
harmful amendment," said Democratic National Committee Voting Rights
Institute Chair Donna Brazile. "The Republican Party continues to play
politics with the most fundamental right in our Democracy, the right to
vote. The American people went to the polls and spoke loud and clear
about their desire for change in November. Just because Republicans
dislike what Americans are saying doesn't mean they can block voters'
access to the ballot box. Democrats believe that democracy works best
when all legally eligible voters can exercise their right to vote. And
we believe that we should be working to make it easier and not harder
for Americans to vote and have their vote counted."

Looks like the vote/election rigging is already a number one priority to the Repubs - they know they cannot win any other way.

Thank god the Dems blocked it.
The most obvious example of Repubs opposing 'mass participation' in elections is the fact they have always prevented the Dems from passing laws that would have people register to vote as well as voting at work! Most people who don't vote would probably do it if they voted at or near their workplace. And of course, most workers vote Democratic.
Here in AZ, there are horror stories of citizens being turned away at the polls. Here, you need several forms of I.D. Most people will whip out their Driver's license, SS card, and utility bill. If you've moved and failed to update all forms of I.D. with your new address, the addresses will not agree across all I.D.s. and you'll be turned away.

Obama called for bipartisan participation in being of service to the people; not their own self serving interests and re elections. If Republicans refuse to sit down and be aired live for all to see who is actually not participating in doing the common good for and of the people, then Obama will be correct in stating that those opposing help of the people will be called "obstructionists." I will be watching this air live and want the rest of the world to see who is actually doing something meaningful for this country, and the Republicans had better get on board and work together; fighting and bickering doesn't do anything but prove they are acting less of a figure of the people and more an empty suit for the corporate interests that lobby for their own interests. Bring on the live coverage of the talks between the parties and bring the common good of the people who make up this country.

Ahhh... I don't see anything wrong with *proving* you're a citizen in order to vote... one can simply be issued a voters ID card at the time of registration... oh, wait... they already DO that! (at least in WA State when I first registered).
Oh... and the repubs weren't the ones who THREW AWAY over a MILLION or so absentee ballots in 2000... because "they wouldn't make a difference". As a former military member, and a military spouse... I will *never* get over THAT!

All that is needed is that you should have to show ID and be an AMERICAN to vote. If you are illegal then you have NO rights.
As for the voting fraud. The wonderful democrats have dead voting and made up names voting. Those are at this time law suite going on against the democrats.
Gee and I thought they were so ethical. NOT.
And do not forget it was the democrats that did not want to count the military vote on the 04 election.
Remember THEIR words "every vote counts". That did not mean the dead. Or illegals.

I am a democrat. This person does not represent me.
I understand the Republican reason for wanting this.
I would do it, WITH conditions:
1) time before implimentation to allow people to get said I.D.s;
2) a package to insure that they do (all but illegal immigrants and felons, of course);
I am unimpressed with the reckless and baseless seditious rumor mongering this poster is attempting to pass as fact. The treatment of our elected representatives as "guilty until proven innocent" is as Un-American as you can get.
I am no longer silent when people in my party act seditiously or pursue socialist agendas. Let them join the Socialist or Communist parties, instead of using mine as a front.
Republicans, take a hint. Do the same, on either side of the political aisle. Democrats, your silence shames you. We are stronger than that. We are patriots whether we agree or disagree with the war.
WE DO NOT NEED TO TOLERATE SEDITION.

Thats not true. Baby boomers are quickly becomming the "ELDERLY" that you speak of. The boomers are more likely to have a government issued ID card ie: drivers license.
The Dems voted it down, because they want the illegals to vote, even though they have no right to vote.
I believe that eveybody who wants to participate in this fundamentally American exercise, Should be required to prove who they are.

Of course the Democrats stopped it. They like stuffing ballot boxes and it would be much harder if ID was required.
