I was just wandering if I need to have a lid on a 30 gallon fish tank with lionheads in it? Will they jump out?

I have some lionheads and trust me they won't jump out! I suggest adding a lid on.It's safer for the fish. Sometimes bugs may fall in. Some lids come with a light so the water can be a little warmer. Sometimes fish like it. Don't leave on there for that long though. You might fry the fish.......ouch....

Is it absolutely necessary - No. Is it a good idea - Yes.

Most goldfish have the occasional habit of jumping. They usually land back in the same tank but there's always that one time when you're not looking or you're out for the day. They are usually jumping after something that looks tasty to eat. There are many different kinds of covers available in different price ranges. But you will need to be the judge of what's best for your personal situation. Go to the store and see what they have. I have even seen screens just meant to keep cats out that would serve the purpose of keeping a fish in. So would the lid for a terrarium the same size. Of course these all come with different price tags. Just make sure you choose something that will still be easy to handle when it's time to do water changes.

I have a few water friendly friends myself and i have learnt that some may jump out if the tank may be to small for their size, there are too many of them, or if some how the water level may have gotten to close to the rim. You could probably learn more about how to take care of your new friend by calling or visiting your local Petsmart or just a normal pet store. Good Luck*

I would suggest having one, just b/c things can fall into it or *accidentally* be thrown into it. Also fish may be able to jump out of the tank... and whats the use in buying fish and just letting them jump from their tank.

Fish can jump out, so it's always better to have a lid.

I would not get a lid, so your goldfish can go up for oxygen if they need it.
