Hi
There a several reasons why your computer is freezing. Also a bit more information would help to narrow down the problem. But, I will try to cover all the most common reason for computer lockups.
First question is when was the last time you cleaned your registry. Having a corrupted registry can cause a whole host of errors and problems. Freezing up is one of them. If you have a lot of unnecessary registry keys that are hogging up your computer resources. Your computer is bound to choke.
2. Depending on your RAM specs and your computer usage. This could also be a the issue. Having an insufficient amount of free space does not allow your RAM to function properly. If you are using a lot of RAM by net surfing or other activities without enough empty space your will get freezes. You don't need to buy new RAM but you should increase your free space by removing unnecessary data and perhaps increasing your virtual memory. The below link will show you how.
3. You have spyware could be the culprit, so do a scan and see if your computer is infected.
4. That last area is a hardware drivers. But I don't think this is your problem if you haven't added any new hardware. . So, the drivers should still be up to date. So try the first two suggestion and see if you can get your computer to stop freezing. Hope this helps.

This is a common question that is not easy to answer. Lockups can occur because of many factors.
1: Your operating system has become corrupt. In this case a reinstall of the OS with all your programs would fix it.
2: Processor or memory module or motherboard is starting to malfunction. These are harder to find sometimes because you need to swap with a known good component to see if it fixes the issue. This can get expensive. One thing to do is enter the motherboard bios and monitor the temp of the processor. If the processor is showing extremely hot temperatures then you may have a malfunctioning cooling fan or processor. If the fan is working then I would suspect the processor. Please refer to manufacturers guide to entering piloting the menu in bios.
3:Check all mouse and keyboard cables for possible bad spots. A short here can stop a computer dead in its tracks. Simple fix is replacing the bad component.
4: Hard drive malfunction can do this also. Try to get a diagnostic program from the manufacturer to test this. If it is the case then a new hard drive is required.
5: There are more reasons this could happen but the fact is you may just need to start by installing the OS again and see if that fixes it. If not then find a person that can swap the hardware with known good parts to see which item is actually causing the issue.

Could be overheating; could be a virus; could be a failing hardware issue (e.g. Hard Drive). Try to give more detail. How often does is freeze. Have you recently added or downloaded any programs or files? Any other symptoms? Inquiring minds want to know.

I will guess that you could use more RAM. If you're running XP and you have less then 512 megs, that is probably the problem. Second thought, this could be a heat problem. When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your system?
