How do you think people generations ago, today, and generations to come can relate to the message of the story?

I don't think that the place in time of any generation makes any difference in relating to the messages of this story since it speaks of some eternal verities, virtues such as bravery, compassion, fellowship, honor, integrity, persistence, sacrifice and nobility.

Throughout all the ages, these have inspired and will continue to inspire us to fight evil and injustice and to emulate the heroes of "The Lord of the Rings" in any way that we can.

Some of the themes are pretty constant. The importance of sticking with your freinds and standing up for what's right even when the odds seem against you. And especially don't ignore the little guy, he could be the most important person around!
