Wish the McCanns all the luck in the world finding Maddie but i feel if they had done it differently the out come may have been different. But they never helped the police from the outset by lying and i feel buy all this jetting and publicity around the case has signed Maddies death sentence

It's only OK to do this if you are a doctor or have a similar profession. Don't even try it if you are a single mother and live in a council estate, but as long as you have a couple of pounds in the bank (usually because you are too tight to pay for a baby sitter!) then it's OK to 'make a mistake'.

rufus...if you are a professional counsellor then we are all in trouble. What happens if one of the vulnerable people you are meant to be helping has a different opinion from you, do you shout them down with a lot of abuse like what you do on here?

It depends on the circumstances and age, those under 5 need constant supervision even at home, as they get older and more mature they can be left alone longer, as when you go next door or across the street. Those over 14 can normally be left alone for up to a day at home, less at a hotel.. A lot depends on the maturity of the child and the security of the place where they are left. A hotel is considered safe as home and when a child is asleep upstairs at home you don't check all that often. You or I would not have gone out to eat even if able to check the child every 30 minutes, but they thought it would be sufficient, they thought they were being responsible. They made a mistake, which no one can disagree with, but are you perfect and without mistakes? If the McCanns thought the place they were staying was as secure as their home they were checking often enough. There have been children kidnapped from their beds in their homes, while the parents were in the home. Would you say that those parents were unfit because they didn't check their children every 30 minutes in their own homes? It is possible that the kidnapper would wait and observe the parents of his target, hoping they would go to sleep, have drinks and music on a balcony, walk to the beach and back, anything that would provide a window of opportunity. So in this case he may have watched the girl be checked every 30 minutes and made his move. The parents made an error of judgement, but they could have been asleep in the next room and still had it happen. The truly guilty person is the kidnapper, so why not attack him instead of the suffering parents? Do you think they are enjoying all this, that they are really that shallow? I doubt they are. atavacron - There are people who live on farms where they may both be 100 yards from their house while the children are asleep inside and they have full view of the house. When someone walks in takes one of their children and runs away who is guilty of a crime? Are they bad parents for being out in the field? What if the parents are out in the backyard by the pool and the children upstairs when someone walks in the front door and steals a child? What if they are asleep too in their bedroom at the other end of the house? The kidnapper is 100% at fault in any kidnapping. The criminal is always at fault, no matter how easy the victim makes the crime. If someone is known to carry cash and not lock his front door the criminal who walks in to take the cash is still 100% guilty of theft. The victim is never guilty, except of stupidity.

That's the whole point "louloubelle2006", people have made similar "mistakes" and had their kids taken away from them by social services or been prosecuted and fined for neglect. The whole approach by the media has been to play down the seriousness of what the McCann's did. The Sky news reporter even said that they were "just 150 yards away" as if it was at the end of the garden or something when in reality it was down the street and around the corner.

What makes the situation even worse is that the McCanns have become almost like celebrities and seem to be in complete ignorance of their own stupidity. I guarantee that the attitude of the media would be one of damnation and persecution if the McCanns had been a working class couple who left their kids alone instead of a couple of middle class professionals.

Hello,

I think they were wrong that they left the children alone that night, but at the same time I have sympathy for them.

You think they were wrong that they left the children alone that night, and you are unhappy that “they are making money out of it”, because if it was you, there would have been a witch hunt- Right?

If it was you I would still offer you my sympathy! But do you think the anti McCanns would offer you any sympathy?

Take care

Yes, I agree with you. It is all about Madeleine.
I am very surprised by the post below. There is actually a petition against the family!

I don't understand how some people are not identifying with what the McCanns are going through-

Imagine lying awake every night, wondering whether your child- your own child- was alive, or was at that moment being beaten or starved or molested in the hands of some monster. I could not bear such a thing.

No NO NO it is all WRONG. No caring mother or father would do what they done. I am not a parent myself and it makes me sick. If I had children I certainly wouldn't leave them out of my sight for two seconds. I am hoping this has not started a new craze with parents who have seen the McCanns not being punished for it and they think they can get away with it. Only the McCann's can get away with something like that.

No children of that age should be left on their own. To say the McCanns were only a few hundred yards away, is a few hundred yards too far - as has been proved!! Anything could have happened - not just abduction but also fire, choking etc. Checking up on them every 1/2 hour is not good enough. You are supposed to be there to look after your children, not leave them to fend for themselves.

Piltdown why do you persist with the same post?
The Mccann's have NEVER admitted that they made a mistake! They have however sought to justify their failure to carry out normal parental duties, by claiming that "Thousand do it" (Leave the kids home alone).
By supporting the Mccann's people are condoning their behaviour, both before & after Madeleine went missing.
Never Leave Children Home Alone, Think of the Risks.

no, its not ok,i would never leave my children alone, and think there is something dodgy about the whole thing. i'd like to know why there is no mention about neglect,is this because they are doctors? would it be different if the parents were young and unemployed? they did a news conference in germany, shown on sky news, the father said he couldnt function for 2-3 days, if that was my child missing i'd need sedating because i'd be hysterical, they trust the babysitting service NOW for their twins, why didnt they at the beginning? i'd have the twins by my side every second of the day, they've lost 1` child but now feel able to trust strangers with their other 2.after watching them(well, the father, because the mother doesnt speak) there is no emotion in his face.travelling around the world, going to a jazz band in honour of maddie? are they parents who care? that is not going to bring her back.if it was me i would be an emotional wreck.i really hope that she is found safe and well, but the parents need questioning more, why wasnt all this done for sarah payne?

They need to be charged with neglect. It is NOT ok to do what they did. I would NEVER leave my son alone in a hotel room or at home or anywhere. There are too many things that can go wrong when you're not there.
They wouldn't be in this situation if they had been responsible parents.

If you can find me a post that says it is ok to leave kids alone from a so called "McCann Supporter" then fine, but I don't think you will be able to.

NO ONE CONDONES IT!! Some people just realise it was a terrible mistake, an error in judgement on their behalf and their little girl is still missing. The person who is really at fault is the sicko who took the girl.

How do you know they were lying, sorry I had not realised you were a fly on the wall in their apartment. We cannot imagine to know the truth of what happened from the shoddy reports in the British media that have contradicted themselves daily since poor Madeleine was taken.
