Since all of them seem to ask for money how do we know if it's not a scam or that they don't really use the money to buy drugs or beer?

I think a majority of them use the proceeds to buy drugs and booze. If I were homeless I sure as hell would. There was some dude that asked the wife and for some cash the other day. He had a nice bike, new hat and shoes, yet still claimed he was homeless. I don't gibe any of those people cash. There is a 4% unemployment rate in America. Why can't they go get a job like normal people?

ask to see their house key----if they show you one..... guess they aren't homeless...... I think someone who has a job and a car and a place to live would have too much dignity to be on the streets begging for money... NOT that homeless people have no dignity... it's just that if someone were to pull a scam and PRETEND to be homeless just to get extra money, he'd have to be a shameless SOB.... and YEAH, most of these homeless people who beg for money do it for beer or food and some for drugs, but they aren't doing it in your yards, they aren't bothering your kids, they are just trying to survive the best and ONLY way they can for the moment. I've known business executives who for some reason lost their jobs, their families AND their homes and have (with a LOT of shame) ended up on the streets... Every homeless person has a story---instead of putting them down all the time, why not take the time to sit and LISTEN to them....are you all THAT much better then they are????

Does it really matter? You will only be judge onr your actions. Once you give the money to them, then whatever they decide to di with it is there issue.

I went to an Ashram (hindu Holy place) once and heard a great story.

A man with a Ph.D from Harvard was doing Sava (work for the Guru which brings you grace). He was seperating split peas from split Monk beans. The Guru came in and asked him what he was doing. He told her. Well, this got her curious. She went into the kitchen and asked them and they repeated the story. Well, the guru needed more info. She asked how the beans and peas were delivered. Well, in a big bag - all together. And then what did they do with them - well, the Harvard Ph.D separated them out and then what did they do with them? Well, they poured them into the soup together.

What a waste of time, hun? But the Ph?D wasn't wasting his time - he was receiving Grace and enlightenment from his task. He was giving. It was the other people who were wasting his time - the other people who were being foolish. It didn't reflect on the Ph.D at all how foolish the task, it was the accepting way he did it.

When you give - you don't need to wonder if it's a scam. You are still being a charitable person and won't be judged for what they do. Only for what you do.

The Houston police interviewed the homeless that were always in particular areas and found the majority of them were sex offenders. Same thing happened in Tampa, Fla. The police said to give them money only keeps them on the street, and if we stop, they will be forced to go to the shelters to get what they need. If you want to help the problem, give to a charity for the homeless.

Instead of giving them money that could be used to buy drugs or alcohol, go and buy them some food from a local McDonald's or other place that sells food. You will then know that they are getting a good meal and aren't using the money for anything besides necessities. Hope this helps!

Umm.... why is this in Mythology and Folklore? Do you think homeless people are fake?

Now I admit, some are. However, it is a growing problem globally. If you want to give someone something, go buy the food and give it to them. If they really wanted the money for alchohol, you'll be able to tell.

You don't know unless you follow them around. There was a guy that stood on the corner with crutches and I used to give him money all the time, I used to give him like 20.00 when I saw him because I felt so sorry for him. then....

My car broke down and I had to start riding the city bus. Guess who got on..........That's right the guy with the crutches, only thing is he was carrying the crutches and walked just fine. He told the guy that was with him (that stands on another corner) that he made enough money to buy him a 12 pack of beer and buy his wife the earrings she has been wanting that he has been saving up for.
I was soooo furious with him that I told him off.

There is no real way to tell. I heard there was this one guy who hitchiked up and down the coast and he asks for money at rest stops etc. I heard he owns a mansion up north.

I've also heard stories of people handing fresh sandwiches to those with a sign saying they needed money and they threw the food on the ground!

I believe most of them are on drugs.

Your intuition will give you the answer. If there's a little nagging voice in the back of your head that says 'something's not right' then it isn't.

You can also offer to buy them a meal. Destitute homeless people will gladly accept. People who are trying to scam others will get offended.
