A body was found and they think it was the 18 year old girl that just went missing.

Should there be more programs out there to help women learn how to defend themselves?

I grew up in Los Angeles and learned how to keep safe. They told us to never get in a car with someone. You'd be better off running or fighting and getting shot because you'd have a higher change of survival that way. Once in the car your chances go way down.

I moved to a small town and I was shocked that no one teaches their children how to stay safe. Things as simple as, you walk down the street with traffic coming toward you. If someone suspicious comes along you simply run in the opposite direction of the car.

Now I know this kinda stuff doesn't prevent all crimes but it seems like it would help.

How could we do more to protect and educate women?

Personally, I don't think that should be restricted to women. Basic self-defense should be a regular part of the physical education program at every school in the country.

It is unfortunate that parents do not teach their children (as you said), or teach them wrong (like go for the groin first which is the most guarded body part on a man) The eyes or throat is much more effective.

But, there are programs in many places. I know several martial arts places around teach women basic self-defense for free. There should certainly be some very publically announced trainings for women. You show me a city which does this for free and WIDELY MARKETS it that they are teaching thousands of women monthly, and I will show you a city with two advantages:

1. Women who can defend themselves.
2. Men who wonder whether the woman they are considering attacking has been trained to kick their @ss, and think twice.

gunrrobot...If I could give you 10 thumbs for that, I would.

I'm really sorry to read that the body might be hers. Her parents have really been strong, the community has backed them up and they've raised a good bit of award money in the hopes of being able to 'buy' her back. How sad.

I think that courses in self defense should be considered as a gym course and be made optional. That way the young can get a head start.

Gee, I'm really sickened by this. I felt that she would turn up dead but was hoping for the best.

There are SO MANY laws on the books in most states, that protect women.

In my state, you pick up the phone, call 9-11 and the man has to either leave or go to jail. And women can't just drop the charges anymore.

You are right that the proper focus is educating women about their rights and their options. Many of these victims are life-time victims of domestic abuse.

There are many programs and help is available. Even the churches I know about provide education and assistance. No one is telling wives to stay with abusive men (or vice versa).

I don't have a daughter, but if I did, she would be in Girl Scouts, where these survival skills and self-empowerment attitudes are taught.

One thing I do know, you do not vote for a woman president whose greatest claim to fame is her philandering husband. Talk about a top-down theory of dis-empowerment.

ADDED: I apologize if I have focused on domestic violence, and that wasn't really your focus. But in spite of these horrible headlines, the real threat to women is still domestic violence.

I really believe in the first answerer's response,

Women should learn to be more comfortable carrying a gun, (although not all of them know that gun carry in a purse is a mistake).

Those that won't carry a gun should explore pepper spray (although only a few brands are truly effective: Fox Labs pepper spray is the best quality), as well as perhaps stun gun technology (although it seems to me that the size of the stun guns should be made smaller for carry)

I think Women must look to themselves for protection primarily; when you trust too much in a man for your protection you loose your autonomy, sovereignty and Independence in subtle ways (sadly, women generally don't get this).

Great question, important topic

Expand the 'make my day' laws to cover anyone who is being attacked. Make the death penalty mandatory for rape, murder and any violent action towards a child. Transform prisons back into prisons and not 'correctional facilities'. If you are sentenced to prison for five years, you sit in an 8' x8' cell, alone, for five years. You get fed twice a day through a slot in the door and the only thing in your cell is a toilet. No parole, no good behavior, no t.v., no inter-net, no books. Just plenty of time to think about what you did and how not to do it again.

Carry a weapon. be comfortable with the weapon you are carrying. Pepper spray is a good option for those who don't feel comfortable with a weapon it's not as dependable as a real weapon though. Some people carry tasers but I won't want to fight with somone I've tased they'd probably be upset and still capable of injurying you.

Teach the women to protect themselves and how to recognize warning signs.

Teach the men to respect women and that there are consequences for actions.

Don't know.
Concealed Weapons help.
The girl they found, although beautiful, was very strong willed, and no pushover. She never acted like a liberal.
But doesn't make any difference.
No matter how tough you are, no matter how big you are, there are holds that can drop you to your knees.
