If the gun isn't registered and they haven't left any prints on it, there is no way to trace it back to them. It's better to drop it at the scene of the crime than get pulled over and have the police find it in your car.

They leave the gun at the scene of the crime for two reasons.

1. to send the message that it was a planned professional hit. usually the hint is for other mob families or other gangs to get the hint...rarely for police...they like to stay away from the eye of the police

2. to get away easily. no one will see you running to get into your car with a gun in your hand if you simply drop it and walk away calmly. you'll be just another person on the street.

the serial number is always scratched off the gun and the fingerprints are never left behind.

When they do this, it's usually an indication that it was a professional hit. The serial number has been completely been obliterated. and they use special tape on the handle and trigger that does not pick up fingerprints.
