This is not that uncommon. However, the same thing happened when I was your age. I began at nine and by 12 it was unbearable. I was put on birth control as well. It did not really help. Then my daughters repeated my history. It turns out that they and myself have a condition called von Willenbrands. Not life threatening but we bleed longer and heavier then the average person - even from a cut. Have your mom read this answer. She may want to ask your doctor to test for this.

heavy periods are nothing to fool around with. i started when i was 8 and by the time i was 11 i was becoming anemic during the time i had my period because i was bleeding so heavily, and couldn't function because my cramps were so terrible. i started the pill at 12 and it helped me immensely, and i would do it again if i had to. it just made my life so much easier, not having to plan my day around where the bathroom was so i could go change my pad every half-hour (literally), not being in constant pain, not feeling sick the whole time, etc..you should at least try the pill- you can always go off it if you don't like it. good luck hon-

Sorry hon, some of us are not as lucky as others. I'm 28 and still not regular. The birth control pill is a god send! You know the exact DAY you will get it, and it is very LIGHT and goes away really fast. Don't be afraid.

Good luck.

some women never get "normal cycles",some in their 20's, some are regular as soon as it starts.. being on birth control to even you out isnt a bad thing, the cramps will be easier, periods lighter, pms will calm down, and if your on Ortho Tri Cyclen and a couple others your skin will improve, (sometimes it takes a couple months cause your hormones are being leveled out) but youll be ok

Wow I am 11 and still haven`t gotten mine. Well, you should start on a regular bases in about 6-12 months so it really isn`t normal.

Teens usually stablize with their periods by the age of 18. Stay away from the pill until then.

Note that some girls have heavy bleeding normally if their mothers do. I am like that because my mother had heavy periods.

There is really no "normal". every woman is different. but if it bothers you a lot, go ahead and take the birth control. That worked for me.

Sweetie. Don't be scared of the pills.... They have helped many many women have "normal" periods. Having heavy periods can cause you to have anemia.
