Spanking: Some consider it a necessary part of raising a child...others consider it abuse. Does it cause children to learn to use violence, as some have claimed, or can it be a healthy, positive form of discipline?
I would like to hear from all people who were spanked and those who were not. In studies I have researched the percentage of people who had committed violent crimes has been almost identical among those who were spanked and those who were not. (This was true when around 200 people had voted in a poll, and when around 300 had voted, and when around 5,000 had voted on a "spanked" poll, and 950 on a "not spanked" poll. It does vary as people vote, but the percentages seem to stay about the same.

I believe you should spank. I was spanked as a child and although i have been in a few fights in my life, I am far from violent and have never commited a violent crime. Todays kids are so out of control because we no longer spank. When I was a kid the neighbors would whup my *** if i got out of line and then tell my parents and i would get it again. Nowadays, kids think its abuse if you raise your voice.

I do believe in spanking a child, as I was spanked by my parents growing up. The real issue is when to spank a child. It shouldn't be your primary tool in discipline because you can send the wrong message to the child, and any over used method eventually won't bring the desired change and the child would learn not to do things around you and not learn what they did was wrong. Restrictions should also be incorporated in the disciplining of the child.

I grew up in a generation when spanking kids was the punishment for being naughty. We did not grow up to be criminals or child abusers. A spanking is different from a beating, where the beater leaves bruises and cuts on the kid, and a spanking is just a few whacks on the bottom just hard enough to let him know he had better behave himself.

I was spanked a couple times as a child. I haven't committed any violent crimes, but I'm kind of into S&M now. Think it's related? :)
Anyway, I think it's fine. That's the only way some kids will learn.

I was spanked, I turned out fine but I've been abused also. There's a difference between a spanking and an a s s beating!!
I spanked my kids when they were little, but as they got older I didn't need to any more.
I have great kids.

I consider it very necessary. I now I mentally thank my parents for wearing my butt out whenever I acted out when I see some brat acting up in the store.
Of course I think the true question is: do children who have been spanked enjoy being spanked as adults?

Spanking does not cause trauma or violence. Beating a child can. Most of the yuppies that claim that spanking is abuse are just saying that to excuse themselves from their parental duties. In my opinion, if you're not willing to do the job, you should have never taken it on in the first place.

I got spanked with the bare hand, a belt and a wooden spoon on the bare @ss, and slapped across the face. I have not turned out violent. I grew up to respect my parents and people. I see the need to discipline kids. (no, I don't have any children)
As the Bible says (and yes, I do STRONGLY believe in it), if you spare the rod, you spoil the child. The proof is in this generation of children we see now. They have no respect and lack any form of discipline.
Parents today want to be their children's friend and not their parent. They seem to forget they have a lifetime to build a friendship and only about sixteen to eighteen years to raise their children.
Please if you have children, don't ruin their lives by failing to do your parental responsibilities. I'm not saying beat them, I'm saying don't be afraid to spank them when warranted.

I believe that state and government has taken over our rights as parents to choose to spank or not to spank...yet they say parents are NOT doing a good enough job of raising our kids... and that is why societies kids are the way they are now... having my 2 boys..I can count on both hands out of 25 yrs. how many times I have spanked both of them .....I rarely ever spanked my kids...my parents spanked more than I believed necessary, so that is why I chose to not spank my kids really at all.

When I was growing up, if I did something that deserved it, I got the belt or spanking. When I raised my boys, used spanking when they deserved. The worst disciplined kids were the most that mis-behaved. You ain't seen nothing until you've seen Mormon kids-they are little idiots. Supposed to reason with them. Yeah, right.
