the category of childhood was invented only 200 years ago; before that children were just small incompetent adults. but teenagers were only invented 65 years ago. the idea that you spend years in transition from childhood to adulthood and all the things that flow from that are all new, including rock and roll, harry potter, anime, highschool, choose your own adventure, halo, and Lindsay Lohan.

at the other end of the scale, books are now specifically designed for much younger children than they were a century ago: books that are not meant to be read, but are designed to be chewed on, have their pictures looked at, and to get infants and toddlers accustomed to fetishizing books in the hopes that this will lead to literacy at some later date.
