Depends on what you want to do with it? If you want to do photo editing and video editing, Then pic the Mac (if you are familiar with a Mac).
If you want to write papers, surf the net, and basic things, Choose the hp (actually, just go with Dell -better bang for your buck).

It depends on what you need to use it for really.
If you are getting a computer just for researching, word processing, just normal use, get a basic PC (and yes, HP is one of the better PC brands), or a Mac, depending on which operating system you prefer to use. Macs are, however, more expensive.
If you are an avid gamer, I would still go with the PC (because of better compatibility), but make sure it has a better-than-average to top of the line video card and plenty of RAM. This would also be good for video and picture editing.
If you do a lot of video and picture editing on a regular basis, I would recommend the Mac. They are known to have good processing speeds, as well as an adequate amount of RAM and video memory.
Compatibility isn't that much of an issue anymore, as Apple has expanded a lot over the last few years.
You might also want to take into consideration the fact that very few people write viruses for Macs. Since it is becoming more popular, that may change, but not for a while.
Macs and PCs both have their pros and cons, so it's hard to pick which one is better.
(As for your built in mic. problem, try updating the drivers, which you can find at http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers jsut put in the model number of your computer and you should find it)

Depends on what you want to do. If you are in business I would say a PC. If you are in education I would say a MAC would be better because it has more educational software.
