It's been tried a number of times, but the only time in recent history that any third party has made a decent showing was when Ross Perot ran some years ago.

I do know that Weicker ran on the Green Party ticket in Ct and was elected governor but of course that is not a national race.

One problem is the tremendous cost of mounting a campaign. Until this country decides that only public monies will be used for advertising, a small party cannot compete unless it has a multimillionaire funding it.

The Democrats and Republicans have made it very difficult in the various states for 3rd parties to even get on a ballot. There's typically a requirement that x% of all voters in the state must sign a petition and once on the petition, 3rd parties must get a certain percent of the votes each election to retain their place on the ballot.

Third parties can be useful in helping applying pressure on the major parties and can influence the outcome of state-wide and national elections. For example, it is likely Bill Clinton never would have been elected President without Ross Perot taking a certain percent of the conservative and independent votes away from Bush the elder. In local races, 3rd party candidates can play a bigger role and in a number of cases, have been elected.

I think many people are getting tired of the Big 2 parties and are more willing to look at 3rd party candidates. I think you'll see over time, a greater variety of parties represented in local races. At the state and national level, voters will still be inclined to not vote for a 3rd party candidate due to concern that he or she cannot win. In these cases, they will continue to vote for the lesser of two evils between the Republican and Democrat candidates.

I suggested this a few weeks ago, but now that Fred Thompson is entering the race, I want to wait until I learn more about his intentions!

good luck
this country is way more interested in the kind of thong paris hilton has on this week, than to be concerned with trivial matters such as who is running the country.
