I started in first grade when I learned to write...and I mean write, not just poetry.
But I don't think it's the quantity, I think it's the quality.
Having said that, practice has a lot to do with quality, unless you are "a natural." So, whether you've written hundreds or thousands or how old you were when you started...to me, it's not really significant.
I would advise you to focus on each and every poem and think less about the volume.
People who write also tend to begin to write at different ages. And people who write are also sometimes prolific at different ages.
For example, Anne Sexton didn't start writing until she was an adult. I'm not sure she was prolific, but there is a large body of work.
I started in first grade and have a large body of work, but nothing near what Anne published...and maybe I will never be good enough to publish.
Good luck.

It's strange, you don't realize how many you write until you try to organize them. I've been working on it and I have , and I'm still guessing here, easily 7,000 poems. Understand, I'm 48 and have a lot of years on you. Burt it's fun to look back and see what I was writing about 25 years ago. Women, by the way LOL

Wow good question. I started back in third grade LOL If I count all the ones that have been THROWN IN THE TRASH lol I'd say I've written about 200 poems in my life. Its how I vent and relieve stress and frustration.

I started at 12 and wrote enough to fill 8 book boxes and 14 UHaul Toy boxes - then I stopped. I recycled all the paper and forgot how to write them. I am ever so much more than 20.

I started writing when I was a teenager and now I'm 56 and I've almost finished my first poem. I wonder how long the next one will take!
