They are a series, and the later books rely on events from the earlier ones, so you really need to read them in order.

The first is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (or "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in the UK).

I've heard a fair number of people say the Order of the Phoenix (book 5) was their favorite in the series so far, but you really do need to buy the whole series and start reading from the beginning. If you plunge straight into #5 it won't make any sense.

they are all very good, but you need to start with the first book (harry potter and the sorcerer's stone) in order for the whole storyline to make sense. if you liked that one, then for the best other books would probably be the second one and the fourth one. you should still read them all in order, though. good luck!

I wouldn't buy any of them. If you really want to join the rank and file of terrible writing, get a copy from the library for free. Oh, and check the library book for stains. A LOT of Harry Potter books from libraries are nasty.

My personal favorite is the Prisoner of Azkaban, but you have to read all of the books in order to understand the entire series.

Well you have to read them in order or it wouldn't make sense. I would start with the first one and go from there. They are great books!

Read all of them, even though they are not the literary wonders that miss Top Contributor rightly suggested, they are very entertaining and a fun read. Also the humor is great. Enjoy them.

No - they are hardly the best books out there. The plots arent even terribly original. There are many books that are far better. Harry Potter is a fad now, but they will hardly stand the test of time. Read Wuthering Heights. Pax - C

If you havent read them yet you should start with the first. My favorite is the 3rd (Prisoner of Azkaban) or the 5th (Order of the Phoenix) but I really like all of them.
