This is an amazing question!
Simply put, people have a hard time expressing happiness for others because they are either jealous of that other persons happiness or the other persons happiness is reminding them of their sadness....

It probably depends on whether the thing/event/whatever that you would like other people to be happy for you is presented to them as 'bragging', 'showing how you are superior to them' or is off their personal radar that day. A bit of sensitivity on your part will mean you do not make other people feel inferior when you have something joyous happening in your life.

All I can think of is jealousy. I have a cousin like that. I don't tell her anything anymore because all she does is put it down and then copy me on it. Its sad how some people just can't be happy for someone else.

That's an interesting question. I notice that many people have answered with jealousy. The best answer I see so far is desire. If a person is missing something in their life, it makes it hard for them to relate to people that have the missing element.

everyone is right... it all boils down to jealousy. I had a friend who would always try to "one up" me whenever I had good news to share. When I got a new fake leather couch, she was going to go buy a REAL leather couch. When I enrolled in college, she started a paralegal program. When I got engaged, she went out and bought herself a fake engagement ring and practically forced her boyfriend to get married. We don't talk much anymore, because I don't have room for people like that in my life.

The Bible says that we should rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. I suppose if we sincerely did that, then we would really feel a lot better about ourselves. It's difficult to do sometimes, yet changing our thinking in this direction can alter one's life for the better.

I think it has to do with their own self esteem. It's really hard to be happy for someone else when you own self esteem in the toilet.
My advice try to boost the other person's self esteem and you'll see a huge difference.

In order to feel happiness for others, you first need to find happiness with yourself.
